The close association between history, strategy and the profession of arms is a recurrent theme in the pages of the Journal of the Australian Naval Institute. This was specifically addressed in a 2001 article by frequent contributor, the then Lieutenant Tom Lewis. As Peter Jones, the editor at the time, wrote in introducing Tom’s article wrote “the study of history by officers and sailors has important benefits to their better understanding of the organisation they have joined but also to their longer term morale and retention.” Tom’s article still resonates today.
