THE AUSTRALIAN NAVAL INSTITUTE (ANI) is the leading forum for naval and maritime affairs in Australia. The Institute achieves this through major membership events, particularly the annual Vernon Parker Oration and the Goldrick Seminar; through this website; and through its printed publication, the Australian Naval Review.
The ANI was incorporated in 1975 as a self-supporting and non-profit making organisation to provide a forum for Naval personnel and others interested in maritime affairs.
The main objectives of the Australian Naval Institute are:
- To encourage and promote the advancement of knowledge related to the Navy and the maritime profession; and
- To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas concerning subjects related to the Navy and the maritime profession.
Views expressed on this site are not necessarily those of the ANI or the RAN. The Institute is deeply grateful to its sponsors for making the events and publications of the Institute possible.

Headmark was the official publication of the ANI until 2016. It has been replaced by the annual publication, the Australian Naval Review, and this website as a means of providing a forum for discourse on naval and maritime affairs. The views expressed in these forums, of course, are not the official views of the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Defence Force or the Chief of the Navy. That said, Headmark has had a proud tradition of nearly 40 years of contributing informed research, writing and opinion on naval and maritime matters.
Back issues of Headmark are now available on this website in PDF and searchable-text format. See menu above.
Book reviews, obituaries and other non-Headmark articles will also be published here. Comments on articles can be submitted on the form below each article and will be monitored before publication.
Use the Menu to access HEADMARK ARTICLES, OTHER ARTICLES, REVIEWS, NEWS & EVENTS, and ABOUT the ANI and its Constitution.
