The South Korean think tank Asia-Pacific Leadership Network has published an important monograph External Stakeholders in the South China Sea: Northeast Asia, Europe, and a regional flashpoint. The collected essays are edited by previous ANI contributor Dongkeun Lee.
The volume explores security linkages between Asia and Europe from the perspective of middle-power countries in both regions. While there is already substantial work on Australia’s perspectives on these issues, there are relatively few studies that directly compare the approaches of Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic middle-power countries to the South China Sea disputes. The volume includes chapters on the perspectives of Japan, France, Germany, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines.
