The Commonwealth Government’s 2020 Defence Strategic Update and the supporting $270 billion 2020 Force Structure Plan to enhance Australia’s defence capability, reaffirms the Government’s commitment to continuous naval shipbuilding and the significant maritime capabilities already being acquired to regenerate the Royal Australian Navy. It also foreshadows the investment of an estimated additional $75 billion over the next decade to further enhance Australia’s maritime capabilities. This at a time when Australia, which is highly dependent on maritime trade, faces an environment of increasing strategic competition and uncertainty in its immediate region, the Indo-Pacific.
