On 7 July the RAN sailed into a new chapter with Vice Admiral Matthew Buckley assuming command from Vice Admiral Mark Hammond during a ceremony in Canberra. It marked the conclusion of Vice Admiral Hammond’s tenure leading Navy and the commencement of Vice Admiral Buckley’s appointment as the new Chief. Vice Admiral Hammond said the moment of handover was one of gratitude and reflection.
“The past eight years have been a privilege of a lifetime, stewarding the Navy during a complex and challenging period,” he said.
“As Deputy Chief of Navy, Fleet Commander and as Chief of Navy, I have been afforded unique vantage points from which to witness the incredible achievements of our sailors and officers, our saltwater diplomats, seagoing deterrent force and stalwart defenders of our maritime interests.”
Vice Admiral Hammond thanked Navy’s sailors for “their hard work and daily sacrifices while we enjoy the comforts of home as you stand watch at sea”. He also thanked Vice Admiral Buckley for his outstanding service as Deputy Chief of Navy as he handed over the weight and watch of leadership to the new Chief. Vice Admiral Hammond has concluded his tenure ahead of assuming the appointment of Chief of the Defence Force on promotion on July 9.
Paying tribute to his predecessor, Vice Admiral Buckley thanked Vice Admiral Hammond for his leadership and said he was honoured to build on the foundation laid during his tenure.
“To [Vice] Admiral Hammond, shipmate, thank you for your exceptional leadership as Chief of Navy, and for the example you have set through your service. I am deeply honoured to follow you and build on the strong foundation you leave behind.”
He said, as he took on the role of Chief of Navy, his intent was clear.
“We will invest in our people; we will maintain and evolve our platforms; we will strengthen our partnerships; and we will remain focused on our purpose,” Vice Admiral Buckley said.
He said Navy faced the challenge of undertaking a significant recapitalisation program while remaining prepared with a fleet that was “lethal and ready”, as new capabilities including nuclear-powered submarines, Hunter-class frigates and autonomous systems, entered service.
