IN MAY Japan held its first-ever defense show, in Yokohama. The show coincided with an attempt by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to modify Japanese laws so that the Japanese military (the Self-Defense Force) can join fully in collective defense, meaning that Japanese forces can, for example, join US forces under attack in Asian seas. Current law would forbid such action.
