In January, a Chinese carrier battle group built around the carrier Liaoning steamed around Taiwan, conducting live-fire exercises and launching and recovering aircraft. During the last major Taiwan crisis in 1995, the Chinese were infuriated by the appearance of U.S. carrier battle groups.
