ON 9 May the Russians celebrate their victory over Germany 70 years ago. Their leaders increasingly present it as a solo performance virtually unassisted by the Western Allies, indeed a gift to the Allies which allowed them to preserve their independence. This was very much the attitude during Soviet times, and what now seems to have been a brief reversion to reality has long since ended.
