IT IS nearly twenty years since Denis Orde produced this study of the crisis that followed Horatio Nelson’s appointment to command the squadron patrolling the Mediterranean in 1798. Since then, Orde has written a biography of Cuthbert Collingwood, Nelson’s subordinate and successor in command of the Mediterranean Fleet.
