The announcement this week of the AUKUS Nuclear-Powered Submarine Pathway was momentous. It is hard to recall a more significant capability decision for Australia’s navy since the 1909 decision to acquire the battle cruiser Australia and the rest of the Fleet Unit ships. It will, and much sooner than some would think, fundamentally change the RAN.
