John and Sebastian Cabot: the discovery of North America. By Charles Raymond Beazley. Westholme Publishing, Yardley, PA, 2015. Distributed by Pen and Sword Books.
Reviewed by John Johnston

ORIGINALLY published in 1898, Sir Charles Beazley’s study of John and Sebastian Cabot is a classic of late Victorian historiography. Whereas mid-Victorian writers such as Thomas Babington Macauley had viewed the history of England as a progression towards the apotheosis of politicized evangelicalism, Beazley viewed historical events within the context of their own time and people as individuals and not as marionettes in a drama.
