HISTORICALLY overlooked by Australia’s traditionally east coast focused policy establishment, the significance of Western Australia to the national defence has become increasingly apparent as new factors begin to alter the strategic balance in the Indian Ocean. Today, the State fills a key role in the Commonwealth’s defence posture, playing host to a number of nationally significant facilities and capabilities and giving the ADF a window into several of the world’s least stable regions.
