The ‘Phoney War’ extended from 03 September 1939 to 10 May 1940 during which, many imagined, nothing much happened as the principal antagonists eyed each other warily while planning how best to seize the initiative. In ‘Churchill’s Phoney War’ Australian author Graham Clews puts paid to this presumption in a fine-grained analysis, questioning established records and attitudes and raising new aspects of the British government’s actions, while centring on Winston Churchill’s role.
