RN and France in Russian tanker seizure

HMS Cutlass of the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron has assisted French forces in the boarding of a suspect tanker in the western Mediterranean. The operation highlights growing coordination between European navies in enforcing sanctions at sea. (From: Navy Lookout.)

Cutlass was tasked to shadow the oil tanker MV Deyna, gathering intelligence on its movements and providing imagery to support the French operation.

The vessel was tracked as it transited the Mediterranean on passage from Murmansk towards Port Said when concerns were raised over its identity and activities.

French forces subsequently boarded and seized the tanker on 20 March 2026. Reports indicate the ship was operating under a false flag.
