In September 2025 former ANI councillor Nick Tate highlighted that the Captain Cook Graving Dock is Australia’s only dry berth for the Navy’s largest ships. There has been some discussion about the need for one or more floating docks to augment the nation’s ship repair capabilities. In the Autumn 2003 edition of the Journal of the Australian Naval Institute John Betty wrote about one of Australia’s few dry docks and arguably its most important.
