Air Warfare Destroyer NUSHIP Sydney sails through Sydney Heads and enters her namesake harbour for the first time on 27 March 2020. *** Local Caption *** NUSHIP Sydney arrived in her namesake city for the first time on 27 March 2020, 36 years to the day since the last warship to carry the name arrived in Sydney. The 147-metre long Air Warfare Destroyer came alongside her new homeport at Garden Island in Sydney following the transit from Osborne in South Australia where she was built. Sydney is the last of three Hobart Class vessels built for the Royal Australian Navy and is based on the Navantia F100 frigate design. She is equipped with advanced combat systems, providing the ship with the layered defensive and offensive capabilities required to counter conventional asymmetrical threats. Sydney will commission into the Royal Australian Navy in May 2020. Her sister ships Hobart and Brisbane commissioned in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
