THIS account of shipbuilding and manufacturing industry interaction with the United States Congress is a reminder the current discussion in Australia about ship building is not unique. It is also a reminder that naval capability is derived not just from warships exercising at sea; it also requires the logistics, engineering and industry support. Without all elements of this ‘national enterprise’ a navy is unlikely to be very capable, something which is worth bearing in mind as we look at the Royal Australian Navy and the navies of other nations.
