On 7 November Russian submarine Ufa and rescue tug Alatau arrived in Surabaya. Following their arrival their crews took part in a visit to the Nanggala submarine monument, courtesy calls, subject matter expert discussions, sports and a welcome dinner.
In his welcoming remarks, the Commander of the Indonesian Navy Main Base, Rear Admiral Dr. Arya Delano said, “we welcome the Russian Navy to the city of Surabaya, hopefully the cooperative relationship in the submarine field between the Indonesian Navy and the Russian Navy can be established closely and better.”
The Russian Ambassador to Indonesia HE Sergei Tolchenov expressed his gratitude for the welcome given, he said that “the Russian Navy, felt very happy and proud to be able to arrive in Indonesia, especially the city of Surabaya, hopefully our cooperative relationship in the Submarine field can continue to be well established.”
Commander of the Submarine Unit Colonel Laut (P) Yulius Azz Zaenal said that this is the first time a Russian submarine has carried out a port visit in Indonesia.”
Chief of Naval Staff (Kasal) Admiral TNI Dr. Muhammad Ali on a separate occasion said that the training and implementation of port visits were not only to improve the professionalism of TNI-AL sailors but also to improve diplomatic relations with friendly countries in the region.
