ASPI’s Northern Australia Strategic Policy Centre has releases a special maritime edition of its compendium series ‘North of 26° south and the security of Australia’, featuring articles published in The Strategist by specialists and experts.
The ‘North of 26° south and the security of Australia’ series focuses on the security and prosperity of northern Australia, exploring key policy challenges in the north and offering practical policy options to strengthen national security, economic prosperity and social development.
This edition includes 14 articles on a range of subjects relevant to northern Australia, including maritime strategy and power projection, Darwin as a regional sustainment centre and maritime industry hub, regional cooperation and defence investment in the north.
In her foreword, Lia Finocchiaro, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, highlights northern Australia as the nation’s first line of defence and gateway to the Indo-Pacific, the deep integration of Defence within local communities and the region’s vital role in enhancing national capability and regional security.
“Our forebears in the 1940s understood that the defence of Australia begins here. That same spirit drives us today: to strengthen deterrence through presence, to build capability through collaboration and to ensure alliances take root on Territory soil.”
“This is the North’s time once again. The Northern Territory is not Australia’s frontier; it is our strategic heart. We stand ready, shoulder to shoulder, to defend, deter and deliver for the nation and our allies.”
