About 3,000 people gathered at a shipyard in Groton on Saturday to celebrate the naming of the newest Virginia-class submarine, USS Iowa (SSN 797), Military.com reports.
The 377-foot nuclear attack submarine is set to be the first U.S. Navy submarine named in recognition of the Hawkeye State and one of the two attack-class submarines designed to accommodate female crew members, a milestone first achieved by battleships, according to the Des Moines Register.
