India has taken a lead over China in their contest for influence in the Maldives. This week (August 2020), India’s Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid that New Delhi would fund the implementation of the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCB) through a $100 million grant and a $400 million line of credit, the Diplomat reports.
