On 30 May the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) held the 21st Shipboard Debate on both the large amphibious ship ROKS Dokdo and the helicopter training ship ROKS Hansando at Songdo Cruise Terminal in Incheon under the theme of ‘A new maritime power toward becoming a global pivotal nation.’

The Navy Shipboard Debate, which has been held since 1992 and plays a key role in presenting the direction for the development of the ROKN and national maritime power through various presentations and discussions by domestic and foreign experts related to maritime security.

This year’s shipboard debate was held to spread awareness of the importance of maritime security and strengthening national maritime power, and to focus on the role of the ROKN in implementing the Government’s Indo-Pacific strategy. Approximately 900 people, including active-duty military personnel, academics, and research institute officials, participated, and presentations and discussions were held on 10 topics.

At the opening ceremony of the shipboard debate held in the Dokdo, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Yang Yong-mo said, “Sea power, the power of a nation that utilises the sea, is a key factor in determining how to maintain and create the present and future of the Republic of Korea,” and “Considering the current situation where competition between great powers is intensifying, strengthening our maritime power is not an option but an obligation,” he said.

In particular, Admiral Yang said, “This shipboard debate will be a powerful driving force in implementing the Government’s Indo-Pacific strategy,” and “Our Navy and Marine Corps, together with our comrades in arms, the Coast Guard, will ensure maritime security and safety and develop national maritime power.” “We will firmly support you with our strength at sea,” he emphasized.
