Japanese warships have docked in Wellington, part of showing their presence in the Indo-Pacific region. JS Ise, a helicopter-carrier destroyer, and JS Suzunami, a destroyer, followed New Zealand’s HMNZS Canterbury into Wellington Harbour early Friday, having sailed from Sydney. (From: The Post.)

Ties between the New Zealand and Japanese militaries have grown stronger in recent years.

Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) vessels visited Auckland in 2016 for the New Zealand navy’s 75th anniversary. HMNZS Aotearoa, a New Zealand navy tanker, conducted port visits and exercises in Japan in 2024.

“We are now visiting Wellington and this makes the mutual visits by both our navies,” said Rear Admiral Natsui Takashi, Commander of JMSDF Escort Flotilla Four, through a translator.

“The important thing is to show our presence in the Indo-Pacific region.”

En route to Wellington, the two Japanese vessels conducted a joint exercise with a New Zealand P-8 Poseidon aircraft.
