The Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) recently welcomed two ships from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the destroyer JS Shimakaze and the training ship JS Kashima, on a goodwill visit to Negara Brunei Darussalam from 30 May to 2 June 2024. The JMSDF task group is commanded by Rear Admiral Nishiyama Takahiro.

The visit commenced with a ship tour of Kashima, during which RBN personnel learned about the ship’s capabilities and operations. Rear Admiral Nishiyama Takahiro took the opportunity of the stay to host a luncheon onboard Kashima, attended by Captain Haji Mohamad Sarif Pudin bin Matserudin, RBN, the Acting Commander of the RBN. This provided a platform for informal discussions and further relationship building.

On a separate occasion JMSDF delegation visited the Ministry of Defence Museum, where they explored the history and development of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF). Additionally, JMSDF Medical Officers visited the RBAF Medical Headquarters, allowing for an exchange of best practices and discussions on potential medical collaborations.

In a show of respect and support, the JMSDF delegation also attended the 63rd-anniversary celebrations of the RBAF. This participation underscored their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. Along with the visit, JMSDF hosted a ship reception, which facilitated further interaction and goodwill between the personnel of both navies. The visit concluded with a Passage Exercise by KDB Darulehsan, Shimakaze, and Kashima.

The successful visit underscored the commitment of the JMSDF and the RBN to enhance maritime cooperation and strengthen professional ties. It provided an invaluable opportunity to exchange best practices and promote friendship between the two nations.
