First woman commands a British aircraft carrier

Captain Claire Thompson OBE RN assumed command of the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth on 10 December, becoming the first woman to command a Royal Navy aircraft carrier.

Captain Thompson joined the RN in 2005 and has operationally deployed to Iraq and waters off Libya as well as deployments to the South Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Baltic and the Caribbean. She has also served as Officer in Charge of the RN’s Advanced Warfare training in HMS Collingwood. Captain Thompson’s previous sea command was the frigate HMS Montrose for which she awarded the OBE for Montrose’s contribution in four major drug and two illegal arms interdictions in the Persian Gulf area.
