In the new Strategic Insight ‘What is AUKUS and what is it not? How does it connect to the Quad, the Sydney Dialogue, ASEAN and Indo-Pacific security?’ author Michael Shoebridge defines the AUKUS alliance, its role in technology development and impact on Indo-Pacific security.

The report argues that AUKUS is not a new alliance structure, a competitor to the Quad or a signal of decreased commitment to ASEAN forums by the AUKUS members. Shoebridge asserts that the alliance is not ‘just a pact about sharing nuclear submarine technology that leads to Australia acquiring and operating eight of those ‘peak predator’ deterrent weapons.’
