The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is undergoing a significant transformation of its surface fleet, making rapid capability delivery essential. While much attention is given to high-end lethality, Mine Countermeasures (MCM) remain a critical vulnerability. To address this, Australia should consider adopting the Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) already in service with Japan’s Mogami-class frigates, aligning with the decision to procure the upgraded Mogami-class [1]. This should be followed by integration of this MCM capability within the new Arafura-class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and Hunter-class frigates.
