JMSDF begins Indo-Pacific deployment 2025

On 21 April units of the JMSDF sailed from Japan to conduct Indo-Pacific Deployment 2025 (IPD25). The deployment’s objectives are to improve the JMSDF tactical capabilities, strengthen cooperation with the allied and partner navies in the Indo-Pacific region through conducting exercises and to contribute to the peace and stability of the region and to enhance mutual understanding and relationship with partner navies through the deployment.

The participating units are the helicopter destroyer JS Ise (with Rear Admiral Natsui Takashi, Commander, Escort Flotilla 4 embarked), the destroyers JS Suzunami and JS Akebono, the amphibious ship JS Ohsumi, (with Rear Admiral Ikeuch Izuru, Commander, Mine Warfare Force embarked) and the Mogami class frigate JS Yahagi. They will be supported by a submarine and P-1 maritime patrol aircraft.

IPD 25 units will visit Australia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Kiribati, Malaysia, Marshall, Micronesia, Nauru, New Zealand, Oman, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, the USA and Vanuatu.

They will take part in the following exercises and events – Balikatan 25, International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX 2025), Langkawi International Maritime and Airshow Exhibition (LIMA 2025), Talisman Sabre 2025, Super Garuda Shield 2025, Pacific Vanguard 2025, Joint Exercise with the UK Carrier Strike Group, MALABAR 2025 and Pacific Partnership 2025.

IPD 25 units will return to Japan on 21 November.
