The RAN’s current and future training capability has been greatly increased thanks to the delivery of a new state-of-the-art facility at HMAS Stirling, Rockingham, Western Australia.
On 15 May the Navy Training System Centre – West (NTSC-W) was officially opened by Commodore Training, Commodore John Stavridis, who said the building represented an important step in providing an integrated shore-based training.
He said, “This is more than just a physical building we’re opening, it is an important capability to qualify, certify and prepare our people and teams.This won’t just be a collection of classrooms and part-task trainers. It is an essential step toward Ship Zero and the ability to provide initial, individual and collective training in an integrated shore-based environment.”
Delivered with support from Luerssen Australia, the new facility will provide training solutions for Navy’s Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels, alongside a wide variety of other capabilities and platforms. Already, the building is providing training solutions for the School of Maritime Warfare, School of Navigation, Bridge Training Faculty, Sea Training Group and others.
NTSC-W houses immersive and cutting-edge training capabilities including virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D simulation and more, allowing training to be provided in an integrated, safe and cost-effective manner. NTSC-W Officer in Charge Lieutenant Commander Alexandra Turner said the facility provided state-of-the-art solutions for cross-platform and cross-community training and an increased capacity for highly secure facilities in the west. She said,
“It’s such an important development for HMAS Stirling to be able to provide this training facility on the waterfront. It is already delivering great benefit to a number of schools and faculties across Navy and greater Defence. NTSC-W gives Defence not only a great opportunity for collaboration and the provision of cohesive training solutions, but it also increases HMAS Stirling’s capacity for highly secure, state-of-the-art facilities such as briefing and meeting rooms, among others.
