Almost weekly there is another story insinuating that the US is losing the “race for the Arctic.” Those who support the claim that the US is losing this race often highlight that the Arctic ice is melting and that this environmental change is opening up potential trade routes and making natural resources more ripe for exploitation. (Center for International Maritime Security). Others then point out that Russia has increasingly re-militarized the Arctic and that China has also made inroads to establish itself in the region.
