Michael Hickie is one of the last surviving submarine commanders who served in World War II. The Narrabeen resident has dived under ice floes at the North Pole, torpedoed and sunk German ships and survived a collision with an Italian vessel, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Now aged 99, retired Lieutenant Commander Michael Hickie, who was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross, could read without glasses a letter of congratulations from Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Mike Noonan.
