Beachgoers paused as HMAS Newcastle steamed past Cable Beach, Broome, as part of a training scenario on Exercise Northern Shield, 2016. The Adelaide Class Guided Missile Frigate (FFG) has been participating in the exercise, patrolling the North West shelf of Australia in conjunction with HMA Ships Ballarat and Success. Exercise Northern Shield 2016 is a joint level activity designed to test the ADF’s ability to deploy its forces across the county should the need arise to protect Australia’s population, resources and infrastructure.
