In 1992 the Australian Naval Institute published A Few Memories of Admiral Sir Victor Smith. Sir Victor played a leading role in the formation of the RAN’s Fleet Air Arm and to further mark its 75th Anniversary this year the ANI has released his memoir as an e-copy. It can be downloaded here: A Few Memories of Sir Victor Smith

A long awaited biography of Admiral Smith is being written. The author is former FAA pilot and historian Graeme Lunn. He is seeking any personal recollections or reminiscences about this great naval aviator – whether it is from his days as XO of HMAS Sydney off Korea, helping commission Schofields/Nirimba or when commanding HMAS Albatross, the First Frigate Squadron or HMAS Melbourne.
Perhaps someone who was in South Vietnam recalls his visit as Chief of Naval Staff? Perhaps you had dealings with the Admiral when he was Flag Officer Commanding HM Australian Fleet or in those senior roles until he became the first RAN officer to achieve four stars? Stories from those serving as senior sailors or ratings at the time are particularly sought after. If you have any information please contact Graeme Lunn at graeme.lunn@hotmail.com
