By Vice Admiral Peter Jones AO, DSC, RAN (Retired)*

In October 2002 I had the privilege to take command of the RAN Task Group in the Arabian Gulf and stayed in command through the early days of the Iraq War. For most of that time I also commanded the multinational Maritime Interception Force (MIF) with a mix of Australian, British, US and Polish ships. This article provides a personal perspective on being a commander of a task group (CTG) at sea. Hopefully it will be of interest to those who will embark on such command, but also to those who need to appreciate the vicissitudes of this complex environment.
