Mr Ric Smith served in a number of roles with the Department of External Affairs between 1969 and 1992. At this time he was appointed as a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He served as the Australian Ambassador to China from 1996 to 2000 and as Australian Ambassador to Indonesia from 2001 to the end of 2002. Following these roles, Mr Smith returned to Canberra to commence his role as Secretary of the Department of Defence. Mr Smith fulfilled this role until his retirement from the Australian Public Service in December 2006.
After his retirement from the public service, Mr Smith was appointed by Prime Minister Rudd to lead a review of Australia’s homeland and border security arrangements. In 2009, Mr Smith was appointed as Australia’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mr Smith has continued to work closely with the ADF and Government serving on a number of advisory committees.
Mr Smith was appointed as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 1998 and awarded the Public Service Medal in 2003 for his service following the first Bali bombing.
Mr Smith has honorary doctorates from the University of Western Australia and Griffith University and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.
