AS A year officer at the naval college from 1956 to 1957 I was committed to crew Tam o’ Shanter, the college’s entry in the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race. Our sailing master was Lieutenant Commander John Lancaster, another of the year officers and an enthusiast for everything he took on.
